Guaranteed rent – Private renters twice as likely as social counterparts to be full time workers
A survey of housing in England has revealed that households in the private rented sector are twice as likely to be in full time employment as those in social housing.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has published the findings today (Tuesday) in the English Housing Survey’s Household Report for 2009-10.
According to the survey, 60 per cent of those privately renting were in full-time employment on an average weekly wage of £552 and rent of £156.
Of those in social housing just 23 per cent were in full-time employment with an average weekly income of £291 and rent of £75.
A quarter of private renters received housing benefit compared to 62 per cent of social housing tenants.
In total, 17 per cent of the 21.6 million households in the country are social renters while 16 per cent were privately rented and 67 per cent were owner occupied.
The figures also show that 67 per cent of private renting tenants were under-35 while just a fifth of social housing tenants are in the same age bracket.
In the social rented sector 41 per cent of households were one-person while in private rented homes the figure was 29 per cent. Just under a quarter, 24 per cent, of owner occupied homes were one-person households.
Around 630,000 homes were deemed overcrowded while 7.9 million were said to be under-occupying their accommodation.
